Intrepid

Intrepid is a highly upgraded 1972 Islander 36 sailboat. Designed by Alan Gurney, the cutter rig 36’ long, 11’2” beam and a draft of 6’. She displaces 13,450 lbs with a 5450 lb fin keel with a rudder on skeg. She has a Yanmar 3YM30 Diesel engine.

I purchased Intrepid in May 2104 from Mr Bruce Benton. Bruce, in turn purchased her from Zac Sunderland.

Zac’s story is an American story. Zachary Tristan “Zac” Sunderland is an American sailor who was the first person under the age of 18 to sail solo around the world. Sunderland completed his trip after 13 months and 2 days at sea on July 16, 2009 at age 17. Intrepid was modified for Zac’s voyage.

Intrepid is a part of nautical history. Although I did not purchase Intrepid for any particular reason (except it was a cool sailboat), and have yet never met Zac, I did have an e mail conversation with his dad, Lawrence Sunderland, a few years back and suggested to Lawrence that my intent was to maintain Intrepid in all its glory, while sailing the heck out of it! Since the purchase, my boys and I have participated on 3 Baja Haha’s, up and down the USA West coast, the Sea of Cortez, and now I am getting ready to sail to Australia and eventually continue on my circumnavigation. All in all, a pretty capable sailboat.

Since I have owned Intrepid, I’d say 30% of the people who gawk at her eventually tell me how they personally worked on getting her sea worthy for Zac. It is truly amazing that so many people have so much to say about one little sailboat (sarcasm intended).
